Invitation to an American university as a researcher.
The word, awkward
I'm not quite sure what kinds of classes are being taught in Japanese junior high and high schools these days.
When I was studying English in junior high and high school, I don't recall specifically being taught the word "awkward," as in "This is so awkward."
After graduating from high school and university, I went on to a graduate school in the U.S. in the early 1980s. I feel like I didn’t hear the word "awkward" very often even in America back then.
However, in 2017, I was invited as a researcher to an American university and stayed there for about six months. During that time, I heard the word being used quite frequently.
The vocabulary used at any given time, whether in English or Japanese, might have an element of fashion or trends to it, don't you think?
I'm not sure if this change in language is simply due to the natural evolution of words over time or because the places I visited the first and second times were different.

Bought Too Many Stollens
Since December began,
every time I go shopping, stollens catch my eye.
“They’re selling them here too, and at this shop as well!”
Before I knew it, I kept buying more and more.
Christmas stollens are only available this time of year,
so I can’t help but feel like I shouldn’t miss the chance.
It’s just the two of us, my husband and me.
Clearly, I’ve bought way too many.
To make matters worse, my husband prefers the cream-filled type of cakes
and isn’t much of a fan of stollens or fruitcakes.
As a result, I’m the one slicing and munching away by myself.
I haven’t weighed myself, so I don’t know,
but I might have gained some weight.
Christmas Mass
Christmas is approaching,
and I still haven’t decided which church to attend for the Christmas Mass this year.
That’s because the church I usually go to
has relocated.
It’s now in a less convenient location,
far from the nearest station.
Before, it was just a five-minute walk from my house,
so it was very easy to get to.
Now I’m not sure what to do.
The term "minority ruling party" indeed brings to mind a new political landscape.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which once held an overwhelming majority, has suffered a significant loss of seats and is now a minority ruling party.
This shift means that, even to decide on a single issue, they now need the cooperation of opposition parties, significantly changing the political scenery.
For example, it seems they struggled to pass the recent supplementary budget. The LDP, Komeito, and the Democratic Party for the People reportedly made an agreement to incorporate some of the Democratic Party's proposals.
While the details of this agreement are not yet fully fleshed out, one would hope there won’t be any backtracking on these promises.
To increase take-home pay, it's essential to address not only the tax system but also the interplay with social security. I sincerely hope they will promptly study and implement realistic structures to increase take-home pay.
Empty promises would be unacceptable.
I received a peer review request and accepted it.
It’s a journal that, in a sense, has always been a great support to me.
In this academic society, members register their areas of expertise, and when a submission is made in their field, they are asked to cooperate as reviewers.
I have conducted peer reviews several times in the past, and it seems that a submission relatively close to my area of expertise has come in this time as well. I received a review request and accepted it.
For researchers, publishing papers is extremely important.
Many researchers belong to academic societies and often submit their work to the journals published by those societies.
Some papers undergo peer review, while others do not, but peer-reviewed papers are generally considered to have higher value.
Peer review refers to the evaluation of a submitted paper by researchers in the same field to scrutinize its content.
The results usually fall into one of the following four categories:
- Accept as is.
- Accept with minor revisions.
- Major revisions required.
- Reject.
The first and fourth outcomes are relatively rare, so in most cases, revisions are required. The amount of revision varies, but either way, authors need to address the reviewers’ comments, revise the paper, and resubmit it.
Therefore, both the reviewers and the authors take this process very seriously.
When I am on the receiving end of a peer review, I receive various comments.
To be honest, it sometimes gets on my nerves.
After all, I’ve worked hard on my paper, and I think it’s good as it is, but when various flaws are pointed out, I feel a bit annoyed at first.
However, objective feedback from third parties is extremely valuable. Once some time has passed and I’ve calmed down, I go ahead with the revisions and resubmit the paper.
When I am on the reviewing side, I aim to help the authors produce the best possible paper, so I make sure to point out any issues I notice.
In any case, the goal is to produce high-quality papers for the academic community, so whether reviewing or being reviewed, the ultimate objective is the same.

I got a free book from the library during their book replacement event.
At the library, there was a box labeled "Please feel free to take," filled with books being swapped out.
From the box, I picked up Hibi no Kangae (Everyday Thoughts) by Banana Yoshimoto.
I’m not particularly a fan of Banana Yoshimoto, but the cover illustration looked really intriguing, so I thought I’d give it a try.
I brought it home and started reading right away—it’s absolutely fascinating.
The book was first published in 2003, making it 21 years old now, but it hasn’t aged a bit and is filled with unique perspectives.
I hadn’t felt particularly lucky about anything in my daily life recently, but this time, I felt truly fortunate.

The autumn leaves and golden foliage have become visible in my neighborhood as well.
With many ginkgo-lined streets, the sidewalks are covered in golden leaves,
creating sparkling scenes in some spots.
A truly autumnal sight.
Or rather, with December already here, it’s safe to say winter is upon us.
I even spotted some acorns scattered around.
"The ginkgo leaves of my homeland fall before me."
