Transition to In-Person Meetings and Revisiting Zoom
Since the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, most meetings have returned to being held in person. However, today we had a meeting on Zoom for the first time in quite a while.
It felt somewhat nostalgic. Back in 2020 and 2021, all the classes I was teaching moved online, so I became very accustomed to using Zoom during that time.
Today, because it had been so long since I last used Zoom, I was a bit clumsy at first. However, having used it extensively for several years, I quickly got the hang of it again.
The Convenience of No Travel Time
Looking back, one of the greatest benefits of remote platforms like Zoom is undoubtedly the absence of travel time.
For someone like me, who lives in the suburbs, it’s not uncommon for trips to central Tokyo for meetings to take about two hours round-trip.
Just the act of traveling to and from meetings can leave me exhausted.
But with remote meetings, you can join immediately from your home or office. There’s no need to get dressed up, and of course, you don’t have to walk anywhere or take the train.
This convenience of remote meetings is what makes them so appealing.
Changing Perceptions of Remote Classes
When we started remote learning back in 2020, many students initially felt that in-person classes were better and had an aversion to remote learning.
However, as time went on, students seemed to grow accustomed to it. By around 2022, when in-person classes started to increase again, I noticed that some students began to realize the benefits of remote learning.
For example, they appreciated not having to commute to campus to attend classes.
Now that the pandemic has largely subsided, most classes and meetings have shifted back to in-person formats.
Participating in International Conferences Without the Hassle
Reflecting further on the advantages of remote meetings, one major benefit is the ability to easily participate in international seminars or conferences.
For instance, if there were a large conference in New York, Paris, or Sydney, attending in person would require airfare, accommodation costs, and potentially the hassle of obtaining a visa.
However, with remote platforms like Zoom, you can join these events from your own country, home, or office. There’s nothing more convenient than that.
It also saves significant time and money.
Now that we’ve become so accustomed to remote platforms, I hope we continue to appreciate their benefits in the future.
